Image stolen from AutoExpress - see link below for their comparison with the X3 and Disco Sport
Am I the only one who thought it was going to compete against the X5, GLE, and RX? I was stuck behind one in traffic today and thought “take away the fender flares and it’s not much bigger than my Forester.” Sure enough it is pretty similar: 4" longer, 1" shorter, and 10" wider - probably half of which fits the wide tires. Interior space is about the same. For some reason I guess I just assumed Jaguar, so long associated with big sedans and GT’s would enter the crossover market with something like a Cayenne - but I get home and there’s this month’s C&D with it on the cover against up a Macan instead. The thought of a 380 hp supercharged V6 in something this small actually is pretty awesome (the model I saw was in fact a 35t and once the road opened up it was gone in a hurry). I suspect this will be the right move, since the small luxury CUV market is so hot right now. There is a lot of competition, though. Across the range it goes up against the RDX, NX, X3/X4, GLC, Q5, Disco Sport, Macan, XC60, XT5, and maybe even an Evoque and others I’ve forgotten about. I’m hoping it is successful enough that we get a larger, sort of XJ-inspired crossover based on the Range Rover chassis complete with optional V8.

I’ve seen a few in my neighbourhood. I think Jag really hit it out of the park with this one, and I really hope it does well.
And maybe it’ll get some SVR treatment later on. 5.0 V8 maaaay be a bit big.

It was amazing working at a Jag dealer, because I could do side-by-side comparisons of Jags that were pre-Tata and post-Tata. Holy crap, they were barely luxury cars pre-Tata. The interior quality was cheap leather and “real-but-looks-fake-because-it’s-crap” wood trim. Now they’re damn sexy.

Oh yeah it’s gorgeous. I was just expecting it to be bigger for some reason. I can’t imagine they’ll stuff the 5.0L V8 in. Don’t forget that rumor about BMW selling the a 4.0L turbo V8 to JLR. That should be a bit smaller and may wind up here. Also open up those fake vents and stuff some giant radiators in there and they can probably push another 40-50 hp out of the 3.0 for a limited run car.

Yeah I should wander over to the dealer and check one out for grins. It’s just down the road from the Acura dealer that just got an NSX in so maybe I can hit them both in one trip.

If it fits the V6, it will fit the V8. The have identically sized blocks thanks to some stupid cost cutting move. The V6's basically have a pair dummy cylinders and an extra long crank.

Lengthwise its about 186 inches, putting it right between the Forester (180) and the Outback (189)

Subaru actually lists the Forester at 181.5, but your point remains the same. With the sloped roof it isn’t using the space as efficiently as either Subaru, but damn does it look good. My Outback and Forester are ugly and slow, but are useful and I love them. I’d also love to have an F-Pace in the garage too!

They might be ugly and slow, but they’re certainly more affordable to keep outside of warranty. That Jag would bankrupt you!!

C & D for some reason calls it clever...but its not. http://blog.caranddriver.com/block-party-creating-a-v-6-by-declaring-two-cylinders-redundant/

You’re right! I had totally forgotten about this but remember seeing a diagram of it in Car and Driver a year or so ago now that you mention it.

I just wonder what happens if/when they start sourcing their V8's from BMW. They will wind up with a V6 that is physically larger(and quite possibly heavier) than their V8 option. Or they will drop the V6 entirely, which I hear may be the route they are going, dropping the V6 and moving to an I6 that shares its parts with the I4. Hopefully that doesn’t turn into an I4 that’s dimensionally equal to the I6 with 2 dummy cylinders.

I don’t understand the vitriol. Did the JLR V6/8 kill your family? Because otherwise, why is it such a big deal?

I’m not angry at them, I just think its lazy engineering. They are saving a few bucks by adding 50+ lbs to the car, and weight is always the enemy. It would have been a fairly simple affair for to lop off the back 2 cylinders, keeping everything in front of that identical to the V8 and moving the engine mounts over half a cylinder. They would still get their engine part commonalty and lose 50lbs in the process. If they move the engine mounts over a full cylinder, they’d even get to keep the same transmission and drivetrain parts and all they’d really need is longer hoses to the radiators and such up front.

Huh, I did think it was an X5 competitor. Makes me even more eager for the V8 one.
Does this mean the Levante is also as small? I hope it is.
